Reading Notes: Venus and Psyche Part B
Reading Part B: Tony Kline, Apuleius: Venus and the Goddesses, Link to Stories
Characters: There are a lot of characters that were added to the story such as Mercury, Sorrow, Ceres, and Juno just to name a few.
Plot: As Part B begins you see that Venus finds out about Psyche and Cupid's relationship and is not very pleased. Psyche starts to realize what trouble she has gotten herself and begins to pray to other gods. Psyche is then being sought after by the god Mercury, who eventually finds her and brings Psyche back to Venus. The story that stood out to me the most was "Venus and Psyche". Here you see that Venus is still very angry with Psyche and she is torturing Psyche while she is pregnant with Cupid's offspring. She is explaining how angry she is about the illegitimate child being conceived and that she may not even let it be born because Cupid is immortal and Psyche is mortal. Venus has no faith the Psyche can live up to being proper wife and mother, so she challenges her to sort a pile of various things in order to prove herself. Venus then continues to give Psyche more tasks that she is to accomplish in order to prove herself. After many trials Psyche, evnetually was able to complete the tasks, yet that still was not good enough for Venus. As this is all going on Cupid is still locked away in his room, he eventually is able to leave and return back to Psyche. After going through the turmoil of completing all of her tasks, Psyche was finally able to marry Cupid after she became immortal. As the story comes to an end Psyche and Cupid lived happily ever after. The story still continues with some detail on the bride who was being held captive by the robbers.
My Thoughts: Overall, I really enjoyed the story. I thought it was interesting that it started out by Cupid going after Psyche to seek revenge to ending with them getting married. It was very ironic that even though Psyche was being tortured by Venus throughout the whole story that Psyche still came out on top. I think it would be interesting to write a story based more on Venus' feelings about them getting married, even though in the end she accepted the marriage. I think the root of her anger was because she was terrified that her son would love Psyche more than her and that Psyche was considered more beautiful than her.
