Growth Mindset... "The Power of Yet"
Growth Mindset
Personally, I have never heard of Carol Dweck before. I watch TedTalks pretty frequently and have not come across her yet. Right off the bat, I really liked what she had to say about the "power of yet". I think a lot of times in this day and age people just take the easy way out of solving problems, in doing this they are training themselves to that it is ok to give up on a challenge. Instead of viewing the situation as a lesson they can learn from people tend to just focus on the failure maybe because they are comparing themselves to other people or experiencing pressure from their parents. Although our generation sometimes does take short cuts just like Carol said a lot of it has to do with how employers or teachers choose to handle failure. She continued on to talk about the solution which is to praise wisely, reward based on strategies and problem solving, and lastly to encourage us to go out of our comfort zone. Although each individual plays a role in their mindset influencers such as teachers and employers have the power to improve our mindsets and how we view ourselves.
As far as my own learning goes I have grown up having dyslexia. As a kid, I struggled because I was always behind every other classmate. I would have to go out of class every day for a special class for my dyslexia. I always felt a little bit ashamed, until probably 5th grade, when my teacher told me about how she struggled with dyslexia and that I did not need to feel as if I was lesser than my other classmates. That day in 5th grade I changed my mindset that it was ok for me to be different. Which, brings me back to Carol Dweck "the power of yet". I like this mantra because I feel like we all have the power to continue to grow our mindsets and we should not let failures or obstacles limit us. Below is a mantra I have always believed in. I think we all need to learn to stand up for our beliefs and hold true to them even if there are people who are giving us every reason not to.
